And what do the “leaders” have in mind?

  1. I was a follower of Sun Myung Moon for 10 years, and I know that from a Unificationist’s standpoint, the purpose of assembling these “leaders” is to “testify to Father”,i.e., to proclaim Moon’s greatness and at least imply that he is the Messiah. Admittedly, many of those who attend the conference at Moon’s expense will not see the conference as having this purpose, but all of Moon’s faithful will see it as doing exactly that. Moon holds many such conferences for professors, clergy, political leaders, etc., which invariably include an offer that is almost too good for invitees to turn down (free air travel, accommodation, meals, etc.). In this fashion, Moon is able to appear on the surface to be supporting altruistic causes, while privately among his followers, he can boast that he is proclaiming and expanding his Messianic influence.

  2. This is a very simplistic and ultimately misleading remark. Yes, some Unificationists’ may see it this way, but the genuine hope is that real progress will be made in the cause for peace through attendees working with UPF and other AfPs. But once one is locked into a certain point of view, everything is interpreted in light of that – one can be “brainwashed” in numerous ways! And invitees do not always have all expenses paid. Attendees at UPF-Europe conferences often pay all their travel and accommodation and there are many different situations at UPF-International conferences. And many “speak” for free.
